 For more than a century, the name Hirschmann has been associated with the design and manufacture of beautiful, functional and extremely durable windows and doors. The Hirschmann family enterprise was established in Cologne, Germany in the late 19th century where Josef Hirschmann originally established the family’s reputation for peerless quality in residential cabinetry and fenestration.
In 1982, two generations of Hirschmann’s opted for a new life in America. Bringing with them their skills in sourcing quality materials for the production of their product, they were initially frustrated with the paint finishes available to them. One of the "secrets" of a century of success in Germany had been a tradition of priming and painting Hirschmann windows with the finest European coatings.
Company president, Rolf Hirschmann, recalls the difficulties and frequent disappointments encountered by the family firm when they first experimented with domestic coatings on the mahogany, which is the preferred species of lumber used in the manufacture of every Hirschmann window and door. "Our insistence upon exotic woods has nothing to do with fashion or style – these woods contain natural preservatives which allow our firm to produce a window capable of lasting at least 100 years PROVIDED it is properly primed and painted. The same natural oils which endow mahogany with an extended life are unfortunately able to repel and reject most paint systems and we never would have gotten off the ground in America without access to real Dutch paints."
What goes into the making of Hirschmann windows and doors reflects a deep appreciation for that which lasts and for the synergy between the beauty inherent in wood and its transformation into a daily part of a building’s life.
